Ben is from Bristol in the UK . He grew up playing competitive tennis through school and university before graduating with an MSc. in Mechanical Engineering from Cardiff University in 1994. A career change and a job in banking brought him to the US in 1998 where he has remained.
Ben came to endurance sports and specifically triathlon at the end of 2001. His first ever race involved a pool swim, a mountain bike (he didn't own a road bike) and a run. It was in Central Park, New York City. And from that day to this he has been an avid student of and participant in the sport.
Over the course of the last 8 years he has watched the sport grow from a somewhat obscure pastime to what is undoubtedly now one of the fastest growing sports in the world with real mainstream recognition and participation. Who now doesn't know someone who is doing or has done a triathlon? He has witnessed this explosion first hand. In 2001 the number of bikes with aerobars in Central Park at 5.30am could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Now he is a USAT certified coach who helps coach a club of well over 500 triathletes.
His involvement in the sport has evolved from a very keen participant and competitive age grouper to wanting to share his experience and knowledge with others. Everything he has done was done while working 60 hour weeks on Wall Street. It is not easy to manage work/life/family but it can be done with guidance from someone who has done it before.
He ran his first marathon (London) in April 2002 following a 3 year recovery from a broken back after a ski accident in early 1998. He has never looked back.
He has gone on to race 12 Ironmen and has been to Kona to compete at the IronMan World Championships in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. Along with this he has completed over 15 marathons all over the world.
He has an IM personal best of 9:43 and has run the NYC marathon in 2:54.
