Swimming
-
Always carry a grocery bag or similar to help put on your wetsuit. Legs and arms slide in much more easily.
-
In a mass start don’t be shy. If you are a reasonable swimmer try to stay in a pack and benefit from the draft.
-
Always carry a tinted pair of goggles. A rising sun can render you blind and make sighting impossible
-
Other than being on the correct side of the buoys at corners most races allow you to swim ‘inside’ the course
Biking
-
Know how to change flat tire
-
When weather permits always ride without socks
-
Make sure you train with fluids that are available on the race course
-
Don’t load a bike down with 3 or 4 bottles in a race. Longer races give you refills and a shorter race shouldn’t require that much fluid. It becomes dead weight
-
Use drafting laws legally and to your benefit on a crowded race course
-
Always wear eye protection. Clear lenses if required

My tips on how to run the NYC marathon
Running
-
For short races learn to run with no socks
-
Always wear a hat in hot races. It’s great for holding ice against your head
-
Be familiar with the fluids that a particular race is going to supply you with
-
Where a course winds be sure to run the tangents. It makes a difference
